Some leaders of the All Progressives Congress are reportedly considering alternative political options ahead of the 2027 presidential election amid growing tensions between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and some APC governors.
Sources within the party said some governors and other stakeholders were concerned about Wike’s political activities and their potential impact on President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Wike, a PDP leader serving in the APC-led Federal Government, has been promoting the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State while maintaining support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition. He has also clashed publicly with some APC governors, including Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Uzodimma, who chairs the APC Progressive Governors’ Forum, said APC governors would not support political arrangements that could undermine Tinubu’s re-election or weaken the party.
Meanwhile, APC leaders are reportedly awaiting President Tinubu’s intervention in the dispute. Political analysts Hassan Saliu and Eze Duru said the President would need the support of Wike, the governors and other political actors to manage competing interests ahead of the 2027 elections.
The PDP, however, said it would welcome Wike’s support for its presidential candidate, Sandy Onor, while the party’s interim publicity secretary, Ini Ememobong, criticised the political realignment involving Wike and the APC.
