Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has urged residents to support government and security agencies in the fight against kidnapping, cultism and other forms of criminality in the state.
The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Security and Public Safety, Festus Ebea, made the call in Benin during a programme organised by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to mark the International Day of Peace.
Okpebholo said security agencies were working with the state government to protect lives and property, adding that residents must also play their part in tackling insecurity.
He said his administration had taken steps to address cultism and that the police, alongside other security agencies, conduct weekly bush-combing operations to check kidnapping.
The governor also disclosed that a special court had been established to prosecute suspected cultists and kidnappers.
He urged residents to embrace peace and cooperate with security agencies, stressing that government could not tackle criminality without the support of citizens.
The NSCDC State Commandant, Akintayo Ayinla, said achieving lasting peace required the collective efforts of government, security agencies, communities and individual citizens.
