The Federal Government has ruled out any immediate increase in electricity tariffs, saying it has raised N1.23 trillion towards addressing the estimated N3.3 trillion debt in the power sector.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this in Abuja while marking his first 100 days in office.

Tegbe said the government was focused on stabilising the electricity market, improving power supply and resolving financial challenges across the sector rather than increasing tariffs.

He said electricity generation and transmission had remained above 5,000 megawatts in recent weeks, compared with between 3,700MW and 4,700MW before June.

The minister said the government had identified challenges across the power value chain, including gas supply constraints, ageing generating plants, transmission equipment problems and high losses in the distribution network.

He disclosed that a peak generation of 5,330MW was recorded between August and September, while the 375MW Alaoji power plant was restored to the national grid after three years offline.

Tegbe also said about 350,000 electricity meters were installed during his first 100 days in office, bringing total installations to more than one million as of August 2026.

He added that the government was working to reduce estimated billing, improve revenue collection and tackle electricity theft and other revenue leakages.
