Normalcy has returned to the International Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, Lagos, following a protest by local traders over the alleged involvement of Chinese nationals in retail trading.
The Lagos State Government and Police Command assured traders, foreign investors and the public that the situation is under control, while police said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the demonstration.
The protest reportedly took place at the Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association (ASPMDA) section of the complex, where traders carried placards protesting the alleged direct sale of goods to consumers by some Chinese retailers.
Area E Commander of the Lagos State Police Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police Chike Oti, said the complex was peaceful and secure.
Chairman of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Lanre Sanusi, also said a joint team of the police, Department of State Services and Nigeria Immigration Service had assessed the situation.
He said there was no ongoing conflict between Nigerian traders and Chinese nationals at the market.
The President of ASPMDA, Nnamdi Emechebe, said market leaders had met with stakeholders to address grievances and prevent misinformation, assuring that trading activities would continue without disruption.
The police, however, warned that violent disruptions and unauthorised shutdowns of market activities would not be tolerated.
