Olympic Organisers Approve Crocodile-Inhabited River for 2032 Canoeing Events

Olympic organisers have approved a section of the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia, for canoeing events at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, despite the presence of about 500 saltwater crocodiles.

An independent technical assessment found the river suitable for competition after reviewing weather conditions, water levels and flood risks.

World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide also endorsed the venue, saying it can provide fair conditions for athletes.

Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris said the approval provides greater certainty for venue planning and confirmed that Rockhampton remains the focus for the flatwater events.

Saltwater crocodiles, commonly known as “salties”, can grow to more than six metres long.
