The Consulate-General of Nigeria in Johannesburg has issued a safety advisory to Nigerians living in Kempton Park, Rhodesfield and surrounding areas of Ekurhuleni, following the deaths of eight women.
The consulate said the deaths occurred over about two months and are being investigated by the South African Police Service (SAPS), which has deployed a multidisciplinary investigation team.
According to the mission, investigators have identified concerning similarities in some of the cases and are examining whether the incidents are connected. However, SAPS has not established that the deaths were caused by a single perpetrator or confirmed the involvement of a serial killer.
The consulate urged Nigerians, particularly women and girls, to remain vigilant and avoid walking, jogging or exercising alone in isolated, poorly lit or unfamiliar areas.
It also advised residents to travel in groups where possible, vary their routes and schedules, stay alert to their surroundings and inform trusted persons of their movements.
The mission cautioned Nigerians against sharing unverified photographs, names or allegations about suspected perpetrators, saying such actions could interfere with ongoing investigations and harm innocent people.
The consulate said it would continue to monitor developments and liaise with South African authorities. It expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged anyone with credible information to report directly to the SAPS.
