The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has expressed concern over recent banditry and kidnapping incidents across parts of the Southwest.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the organisation cited the reported attack on the Igbeti-Igboho Road, kidnapping incidents in Ondo, Kwara and Kogi states, and a security alert over possible attacks in Osun State.
Afenifere also expressed concern over the reported attack on the Operation Burst base inside the Oyo National Park Forest Reserve. The attackers reportedly set fire to the base and an operational vehicle, although no life was lost.
The organisation linked the incident to previous attacks in Oyo State, including the May attack on a Forest Guards’ base in Oriire Local Government Area, where five officers were reportedly killed. Teachers and students were later abducted in the area.
Afenifere urged security agencies to strengthen surveillance and security presence in forests and other vulnerable areas. It also called for greater use of modern security technology and closer cooperation among government, traditional rulers, hunters and community leaders.
The organisation commended the Oyo State Government for acquiring two surveillance aircraft and called for their prompt deployment for security operations.
Afenifere further urged the authorities to investigate and prosecute persons suspected of involvement in banditry, kidnapping and terrorism in accordance with the law.
It also called on Southwest governors to implement previously announced measures aimed at tackling insecurity across the region.
