Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has rejected claims that his administration left behind outstanding debts and unpaid obligations when he left office as Anambra State governor.
Obi, in a statement on X, said his administration cleared more than ₦35 billion in historical gratuities and arrears and handed over the state without outstanding salaries, pensions, gratuities or payments owed to contractors for completed and certified projects.
He also disputed claims concerning a ₦2 billion ecological fund. Obi said the money was released shortly before he left office for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis but was left untouched for his successor to use for the designated project.
According to him, the funds were separate from the more than ₦75 billion in savings he said his administration left behind.
The former governor challenged the Anambra State Government to provide evidence if his claims were incorrect, saying he would stop his 2027 presidential campaign if anyone could establish otherwise.
The Anambra State Government had earlier said the administration was still servicing loans inherited from previous governments, including those of Obi and former Governor Willie Obiano. It said the state had reduced its debt burden by more than 83 per cent.
