A delegation from the African Union has visited the Independent National Electoral Commission as part of its Pre-Election and Needs Assessment Mission ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The delegation, led by former Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen, met with INEC officials in Abuja to assess the commission’s preparations in areas including voter registration, electoral technology, logistics, funding, inclusion and transparency.

Mekonnen said the mission would help identify potential gaps before, during and after the elections and recommend measures to strengthen the electoral process.

Representing INEC Chairman Joash Ojo Amupitan, Acting Chairman Rhoda Gumus said the commission was preparing for an election involving nearly 100 million registered voters, 176,846 polling units and more than 1.4 million personnel.

She highlighted the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, result viewing through the IReV portal and collaboration with security agencies as part of measures to improve election administration.

Gumus also said INEC was working with the National Identity
