The Abia State Government has designated five historical and natural sites as heritage monuments as part of efforts to preserve the state’s heritage and boost tourism.
The sites include the National War Museum, Ojukwu Bunker and Government College, all in Umuahia, as well as Ibom Waterfall in Arochukwu and Ulochukwu Cave in Alayi.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said the designation could position the sites for wider recognition, including possible UNESCO heritage status.
He also said the retrofitting of the Ojukwu Bunker and National War Museum was about 80 per cent complete, while work had commenced on the development of the Ibom Waterfall Tourism Corridor.
Meanwhile, the state government has denied introducing new tax increases.
Kanu said the tax rates recently referenced were largely rates introduced in 2020 by the previous administration, adding that the Abia State Board of Internal Revenue cannot increase tax rates without enabling legislation.
He also dismissed reports that akara sellers were being charged N50,000 in taxes, describing the claim as false.
The commissioner further disclosed that gratuity payments covering retired workers from 2001 to 2010 had been made, with preparations underway for payments covering 2011 to 2025.
