The National Orientation Agency has rejected claims by the National Association of Nigerian Students that its involvement in the proposed National Learner Identification Number amounts to an overreach of its statutory responsibilities.
NANS had criticised the proposed Learner Identification Number, describing it as unnecessary and potentially duplicative of the National Identification Number. The students’ body also questioned NOA’s role in the initiative.
However, NOA Director-General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the agency was neither responsible for formulating nor implementing the Learner Identification Number policy.
In a statement by the agency’s Deputy Director of Communication and Media, Paul Odenyi, Issa-Onilu explained that NOA’s role was limited to communicating government policies and programmes to citizens.
He said the agency would explain the policy to Nigerians and provide platforms for citizens and stakeholders to express their concerns.
Issa-Onilu urged NANS to direct its concerns about the Learner Identification Number to the appropriate government institution, while assuring that NOA remained open to engagement with students and other stakeholders, including discussions about the relationship between the LIN and NIN.
