The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has foiled a planned kidnapping operation in Oron Local Government Area and recovered weapons, ammunition and speedboats allegedly linked to a suspected criminal syndicate.
The operation was carried out on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, by Marine Police operatives in Oron, working with Marine Hunters, following credible intelligence about a planned kidnapping in the area.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the operatives raided a suspected criminal camp along the Calabar–Oron Channel.
Items recovered include one Jojeef English pump-action gun, two cartridges, a white rope suspected to be intended for criminal use, two speedboats, three 200HP outboard engines and one 15HP outboard engine.
The police said the recovered items have been secured for documentation and further investigation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the operatives for their professionalism and courage, stressing the command’s commitment to preventing criminal activities across the state’s waterways.
Azare warned criminals that Akwa Ibom would not serve as a safe haven or escape route for kidnappers and other violent criminals.
He urged residents, boat operators, fishermen and other waterway users to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements, persons, vessels or activities to the police.
