FIFA is facing fresh legal pressure after European Leagues expanded its complaint to the European Commission over what it described as the governing body’s “abusive conduct” towards women’s football.
The organisation, which represents 53 professional divisions and more than 1,300 clubs across Europe, has raised concerns over FIFA’s women’s international match calendar and related regulatory decisions.
European Leagues said FIFA’s approach could threaten the growth and financial sustainability of women’s professional leagues while also raising concerns about player health and wellbeing.
The organisation further accused FIFA of a conflict of interest because it acts both as football’s regulator and competition organiser.
European Leagues, FIFPRO and LaLiga had initially complained to the European Commission in 2024, alleging that FIFA imposed changes to the international football calendar without adequate consultation with leagues and players.
European Leagues has now called on the European Commission to ensure that EU competition law is respected and that decisions affecting women’s professional football are not made unilaterally.
FIFA has been approached for comment.
