The Federal Ministry of Works has announced the temporary closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for emergency repair and rehabilitation works.
The bridge will be closed to traffic from Monday, September 7, to Monday, September 21, 2026.
The decision followed an inspection by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the bridge, including damage caused by vandalism.
According to the ministry, vandals had removed bolts, iron rods and other components from parts of the bridge, affecting sections of the expansion joints and steel structures.
The contractor handling the Onitsha-Enugu Dual Carriageway, SKECC, has been directed to carry out the emergency maintenance.
During the closure, motorists are advised to use the Second Niger Bridge route through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, and other destinations.
The repair work will include removal of the deteriorated asphalt surface, laying of a new asphalt wearing course and other maintenance and safety works.
The ministry also plans to install solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras to improve security and monitor activities around the bridge.
Traffic-control personnel, safety barriers and diversion signs will be deployed to guide motorists during the closure.
The ministry said the work will be carried out day and night to ensure timely completion and apologised for the inconvenience the closure may cause road users and businesses.
