The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned that artificial intelligence-powered disinformation could threaten the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, said the growing use of AI to create fake audio, videos and images could mislead voters and spread false political information rapidly.
He said the commission was conducting a comprehensive audit of its electoral technology systems as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.
Amupitan also disclosed that INEC was considering a mock presidential election to test its readiness, including voter accreditation, result transmission and result viewing under conditions similar to election day.
He said the credibility of elections depended not only on the integrity of voting technology but also on how electoral information was communicated and understood by voters.
The INEC chairman noted that AI-generated content had become cheaper and more difficult to detect, while algorithmic targeting could allow different political messages to be directed at specific groups of voters.
He said INEC would strengthen collaboration with media organisations, fact-checkers and technology platforms to combat false information and improve public media literacy.
Amupitan urged stakeholders to work with the commission to strengthen public trust and understanding of the electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
