The Federal Workers Forum has called on the Federal Government to increase the minimum wage for federal civil servants from N70,000 to N300,000, citing the rising cost of living.
The group made the demand in a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly.
The forum also proposed a maximum salary of N1.5 million for Level 17 officers, arguing that the current salary structure no longer reflects the economic realities facing federal workers.
According to the workers, the 2024 minimum wage increase from N30,000 to N70,000 has not been fully implemented, particularly the consequential adjustments and related allowances.
They said rising costs of food, transportation, accommodation, electricity, cooking gas and other essential needs had made the current minimum wage inadequate.
The forum urged the government to review federal workers’ salaries immediately rather than wait for the next statutory wage review.
It also called for the payment of outstanding salaries, promotion arrears and other entitlements, as well as the implementation of allowances and measures to improve workers’ welfare.
The workers further appealed for improved healthcare, housing and car loan schemes, better pension arrangements and other support measures for federal employees and pensioners.
The Federal Workers Forum urged the National Assembly to take up its demands with the Federal Government, stressing that improved wages were necessary to protect workers’ welfare and sustain productivity.
