The Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has arrested a woman, Iyabo Sowunmi, for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta, for her son, Dare Sowunmi, who is on death row.
She was arrested during routine screening at the prison entrance on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The substance, suspected to be the psychoactive synthetic drug known as “Colos,” was allegedly concealed in a sachet of beverage powder.
The Nigerian Correctional Service said she was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for investigation and prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Abioye Adesina, warned that the command maintains zero tolerance for drug trafficking and other acts that could compromise security in custodial facilities.
