The Federal Government has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh, describing it as a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conveyed Nigeria’s congratulations to Alamgir, the Bangladeshi government and its people in a post on X on Friday.
Alamgir was elected by Bangladesh’s Parliament, the Jatiya Sangsad, on Thursday, August 20, securing 255 votes against 88 votes won by his opponent, retired Colonel Oli Ahmad.
The election was Bangladesh’s first contested presidential election in 35 years.
Nigeria commended the people and institutions of Bangladesh for the peaceful conduct of the electoral process and expressed confidence that Alamgir would provide responsible leadership focused on national unity, stability and democratic governance.
The Federal Government also said Nigeria and Bangladesh share mutual interests in areas including economic growth, food and energy security, climate action and international cooperation.
Nigeria said it looks forward to working with Alamgir’s administration to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in trade, investment, agriculture, education, healthcare, technology and culture.
The Federal Government wished Alamgir wisdom, good health and success as he assumes office.
