The Department of State Services (DSS), Sokoto State Command, has warned of plans by terrorists and bandit groups to attack tertiary institutions across the state.
The service said the attacks could lead to the abduction of students, lecturers, other staff and their family members.
The warning was contained in a security alert dated August 18 and addressed to the Sokoto State Government. A DSS source confirmed the authenticity of the alert.
According to the DSS, intelligence indicated that criminal groups had shifted their focus from primary and secondary schools to universities and other tertiary institutions.
The agency said the alleged attacks could disrupt academic activities, create fear and undermine confidence in the government’s ability to protect educational institutions.
The DSS called for an immediate upgrade of security around tertiary institutions in Sokoto State and urged relevant security agencies to deploy measures to prevent the planned attacks.
It also advised the Sokoto State Government to take urgent and coordinated steps to strengthen security around universities and other tertiary institutions and protect students, staff and critical infrastructure.
