WAEC Faces Scrutiny Over 2026 Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is facing criticism over its 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results, with some school administrators and education stakeholders alleging grading inconsistencies and technical problems.

The concerns followed complaints that some high-performing students received lower grades than expected in subjects including Mathematics and English Language.

A school administrator in Ogun State, Sam Abdulazeez, said his school recorded a sharp drop in the number of students who obtained top grades in Mathematics compared with previous years.

He also alleged that the school experienced technical difficulties during WAEC’s preparations for computer-based examinations.

Abdulazeez said the school had previously recorded strong WASSCE results but noticed similar grading concerns in 2025 and 2026.

Another school administrator claimed that some students who performed strongly in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination received D7, E8 and F9 grades in core subjects in the 2026 WASSCE.

An educationist, Fola Adekeye, called on WAEC to ensure that its examination and grading processes meet acceptable standards of integrity.

Meanwhile, the Initiative for School Excellence and Education Foundation has threatened legal action against WAEC over alleged irregularities in the conduct and processing of the 2026 Computer-Based WASSCE.

The organisation is demanding access to relevant examination records and an independent audit of the computer-based examination system.

WAEC, however, has defended the integrity of the 2026 results, saying they were produced through rigorous and quality-assured processes.

The council said candidates’ scripts passed through multiple stages of marking, moderation and auditing under standardised procedures.

WAEC also urged candidates, parents and schools with concerns to contact the council through its official channels rather than relying on unverified claims on social media.
