Nairobi, Kenya, will host the 2029 World Outdoor Athletics Championships, becoming the first African city to stage the global track and field event.
World Athletics announced the decision after a council meeting in Budapest, with Nairobi chosen ahead of London, Munich and Rome. Munich will host the 2031 edition, while Beijing is already scheduled to stage the 2027 championships.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe described Nairobi’s bid as compelling, saying hosting the championships in Africa for the first time would be historic and could help accelerate the development of athletics across the continent.
Kenya has previously hosted several major athletics events, including the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, the 2017 World Under-18 Championships and the 2021 World Under-20 Championships in Nairobi.
The 2029 championships will be held at the renovated Kasarani Stadium, which is currently undergoing a major overhaul ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Kenyan Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya welcomed the decision, saying it reaffirmed Kenya’s position at the heart of global athletics and highlighted the country’s strong running culture.
