Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has filed a fresh N10bn fundamental rights suit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over alleged denial of access to his wife and son while in custody.

In the suit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on August 13, El-Rufai alleged that ICPC officials prevented his wife, Aichatou Asabe, and son, Abba El-Rufai, from visiting him.

He is seeking nine reliefs, including an order directing the ICPC to grant him reasonable access to his family and counsel throughout his detention.

El-Rufai alleged that the denial of family access had prevented his wife and son from providing him with food, medication and other necessities.

He also accused ICPC officers of physically restraining and intimidating his wife and son during an incident on July 7.

The former governor argued that the alleged actions violated his fundamental rights to dignity and family life under the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

His lawyer, Ubong Akpan, joined the ICPC chairman and the Attorney-General of the Federation as defendants in the suit.

The latest case is one of several legal actions filed by El-Rufai against the ICPC since the commission began investigating him.

In February, he filed a separate N1bn suit challenging the alleged unlawful search of his Abuja residence.
