Police recover stolen newborn, arrest suspects in Benue

The Benue State Police Command has recovered a newborn baby allegedly stolen from a hospital in Gboko and arrested some suspects in connection with the incident.

Police spokesperson, Peter Aondongu, confirmed the arrests and said some of the suspects had been transferred to the state police headquarters in Makurdi, while others remained in custody at the Gboko division.

The baby was reportedly stolen from his mother a few hours after delivery on Tuesday. A source said a woman disguised as a nurse approached the mother and took the baby under the pretext of carrying out another examination.

The woman allegedly took the baby towards the labour room before disappearing. Hospital staff reportedly denied that she was a member of the nursing team.

The police have commenced investigation into the incident and are expected to provide further details as the investigation progresses.
