Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Monday inaugurated a state-of-the-art health facility and a health technology academy in Hadejia, Jigawa State, as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and promote the early detection and prevention of chronic kidney disease.

The newly commissioned health centre, located along Garun Gabas Road in Hadejia, is fully equipped to provide screening, diagnosis and preventive care for kidney-related ailments, particularly among vulnerable and underserved communities. The facility was named the Oluremi Tinubu Clinic in recognition of the First Lady’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare across the country.

Also inaugurated was the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Academy, a technology-driven training institution established by the Federal Government through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The academy is expected to equip young Nigerians, healthcare professionals and researchers with digital skills and innovative tools to tackle pressing healthcare challenges.

Speaking during the inauguration, Senator Tinubu described the projects as significant milestones in the campaign against chronic kidney disease, stressing the importance of preventive healthcare and early diagnosis in reducing avoidable deaths.

She noted that the clinic would serve as a centre for early detection, health education and preventive interventions, while the academy would focus on developing technological solutions that would improve disease surveillance, diagnosis and healthcare delivery.

According to the First Lady, investing in healthcare and technology remains essential to improving the well-being of Nigerians, particularly those living in rural and underserved communities. She commended the organisations and stakeholders whose collaboration made the projects possible, describing the initiative as a demonstration of what partnerships can achieve in advancing public health.

She further stated that the clinic and the academy would complement one another by combining medical expertise with technological innovation to improve the prevention and management of chronic kidney disease, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for families and communities.

Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, said the academy would serve as a hub for research, innovation and digital health development. He explained that the institution would support the creation of digital tools, data-driven healthcare solutions and early warning systems capable of improving the detection and management of chronic diseases.

He added that the academy aligns with the Federal Government’s broader efforts to leverage technology in transforming Nigeria’s healthcare sector and strengthening the use of data for evidence-based decision-making.

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, lauded the inauguration of both projects, describing them as major investments that would improve healthcare access and create new opportunities for innovation and human capital development in the state.

The governor also welcomed the launch of the National Community Food Bank Programme for the North-West, noting that the initiative would complement ongoing efforts to address food insecurity, improve nutrition and support vulnerable households.

During her one-day official visit to the state, the First Lady also inaugurated several development projects executed through partnerships between the Federal Government and the Jigawa State Government.

The visit concluded with renewed commitments by both levels of government to deepen collaboration in healthcare, technology, food security and social protection, with the newly inaugurated clinic and academy expected to play vital roles in advancing preventive healthcare, promoting digital innovation and improving the quality of life of Nigerians.
