Seventy-six commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have surrendered to the Nigerian military following intensified counterterrorism operations in the North-East.
The spokesman for Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
According to Goni, the sustained air and ground offensives against terrorist enclaves forced the insurgents to abandon their camps and surrender to troops.
He said the military’s intelligence-led operations significantly weakened the group’s operational capacity, compelling several senior ISWAP figures to lay down their arms.
“Several senior ISWAP figures are among those who surrendered and are currently in a secure location undergoing profiling, debriefing and other procedures in line with established operational protocols,” the statement said.
The military noted that the latest surrender demonstrates the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt their command and logistics structures, and restrict their freedom of movement.
It added that the surrender of the commanders, along with other fighters and their families, reflects the continued decline in ISWAP’s operational strength and morale as military operations intensify across the North-East.
