The Oyo State Government has warned individuals and groups against road obstruction, thuggery, and any act capable of disrupting public peace during the 2026 Egungun Festival in Ibadan.
Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatubosun, said the government remains committed to maintaining law and order throughout the festival period.
He noted that reports had indicated that some individuals were taking advantage of the festival to block roads and hinder the free movement of residents and motorists, describing such actions as unlawful and unacceptable.
Olatubosun urged all participants and stakeholders to celebrate responsibly, stressing that while citizens have the right to observe their cultural and religious festivals, such celebrations must not infringe on the rights of others or constitute a public nuisance.
The commissioner also reiterated the government’s warning against the possession, display, or use of weapons and other dangerous objects during the festival, stating that anyone found engaging in activities that threaten public safety would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to ensure strict enforcement of law and order and to take appropriate action against offenders.
While wishing Egungun worshippers a peaceful and successful celebration, Olatubosun reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, emphasizing that violence, thuggery, vendetta, and any conduct capable of disturbing public peace would not be tolerated.
