President Bola Tinubu has attributed part of Nigeria’s insecurity challenges to the collapse of effective grassroots governance, saying weak local government administration has hindered national development.

Speaking during his nationwide broadcast to commemorate this year’s June 12 Democracy Day, the President stressed the importance of strengthening local governance to ensure democracy delivers meaningful benefits to citizens.

Tinubu said his administration has pursued financial autonomy for the country’s 774 local government councils as part of efforts to improve governance and enhance service delivery at the grassroots.

According to him, empowering local governments is essential to addressing the developmental and security challenges facing the nation.

“Recognising that democracy is undermined when people do not feel its impact, my administration has sought financial autonomy for our 774 local councils,” he said.

He added that ineffective local government administration has remained a major obstacle to Nigeria’s progress, noting that the insecurity confronting the country is partly a result of the collapse of governance at the grassroots level.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening local government institutions as part of broader efforts to improve security, deepen democracy, and accelerate national development.
