President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to deploy 10,000 tractors across Nigeria over the next five years as part of his administration’s strategy to enhance food production, create jobs, and modernize the agricultural sector.
Speaking during his Democracy Day address, the President described agriculture as a key pillar of his administration’s economic recovery and growth agenda.
He said ongoing investments in infrastructure and mechanisation are improving access between producers and markets, creating new opportunities for businesses and employment across the agricultural value chain.
According to Tinubu, the initiative will be implemented through the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF), with the goal of increasing farm productivity, expanding cultivation, and strengthening food security.
“Infrastructure projects across the nation are linking producers to markets and generating opportunities for enterprise and employment. The National Agricultural Development Fund is set to deploy 10,000 tractors over a five-year period,” the President said.
Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reducing inflation, increasing food production, creating employment opportunities, and improving the living standards of Nigerians despite prevailing economic challenges.
The tractor deployment programme forms part of a broader agricultural mechanisation initiative that includes the supply of complementary equipment such as ridgers, harrows, and combine harvesters to support large-scale farming operations.
The initiative is also expected to encourage local industrial development through the establishment of tractor assembly facilities, improve technical capacity, generate employment, and expand farmers’ access to modern agricultural equipment.
The Federal Government believes the programme will help reduce dependence on manual farming, increase cultivated farmland, and significantly improve agricultural productivity across the country.
