The Oyo State Government has alerted residents in all 33 local government areas of the state to the heightened risk of flash flooding during June 2026 following forecasts of increased rainfall and thunderstorms.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, warned that high-intensity thunderstorms and heavy surface runoff could lead to temporary road overflows and flooding in some communities.
He noted that the government has intensified the clearing of critical drainage channels across the state to reduce the impact of flooding. However, he urged residents to support these efforts by ensuring that drains, gutters and waterways around their homes and communities remain free of waste materials such as plastic bottles, silt and other debris that could obstruct the flow of water.
Aderinto also advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, particularly at night, warning that flash floods can be deceptive and powerful enough to sweep away vehicles and individuals.
The commissioner called on residents to cooperate with the government in safeguarding lives and property. He further warned against unauthorized dredging and construction activities capable of altering natural water channels or blocking drainage paths, stressing that such actions violate environmental regulations and would attract sanctions.
Residents in low-lying and flood-prone communities were urged to take precautionary measures, including raising valuable household items, important documents and electrical appliances above floor level to prevent damage.
Parents and guardians were also advised to keep children and other vulnerable persons indoors during periods of heavy rainfall to reduce exposure to potential dangers.
Aderinto assured residents that emergency response measures had been activated to address any flood-related incidents and urged everyone to remain vigilant, safety-conscious and prepared throughout the rainy season.
