Senator representing Oyo North, Abdulfatai Buhari, has expressed deep concern over the plight of the abducted school children in Oyo State, revealing that the kidnappers are using the victims as human shields to prevent security forces from carrying out direct military operations against them.
Speaking on the challenges surrounding efforts to rescue the children, Buhari explained that the abductors operate within a vast and difficult terrain that stretches across multiple states and extends toward international borders. According to him, the dense forest environment provides cover for criminal groups, making it extremely difficult for security agencies to track their movements or determine their exact locations.
He noted that unlike conventional military conflicts where targets can be clearly identified and engaged, the current situation is far more complicated because the abductors constantly move from one location to another. This mobility, coupled with the difficult landscape, has created significant challenges for rescue operations.
The senator disclosed that the kidnappers deliberately keep the abducted children close to them, effectively using them as human shields. He warned that any attempt to launch a direct assault on the criminals without careful planning could have devastating consequences for the innocent pupils.
According to him, the safety of the children remains the top priority, and security agencies must exercise caution in order to avoid actions that could put the victims at greater risk. He stressed that the presence of the children around the abductors limits the options available to security operatives and requires a more strategic approach to securing their release.
Buhari also spoke about the emotional toll the abductions have taken on affected families and communities. He said government officials and stakeholders have continued to engage with the families, offering support and reassurance while efforts to rescue the victims continue.
The senator emphasized that the situation highlights the growing security challenges facing communities in parts of the country. He called for sustained collaboration among security agencies, government authorities, local leaders, and residents to tackle the menace of kidnapping and restore confidence among citizens.
While expressing optimism that the children would eventually regain their freedom, Buhari urged patience and understanding from the public, insisting that every effort being made must prioritize the preservation of human lives. He maintained that the rescue of the abducted pupils requires a delicate balance between applying pressure on the criminals and ensuring that the victims are not harmed in the process.
He further reiterated the need for improved security measures across vulnerable communities, particularly in areas located near large forest reserves, to prevent future incidents and safeguard residents from criminal activities.
