LASU Student Dies After Armed Robbery Attack.

A student of Lagos State University (LASU), Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, has died after sustaining severe injuries during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.

Otabor, a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts, was reportedly attacked alongside some of his friends by armed robbers on the night of May 29, 2026, in an incident that occurred off campus.

Following reports of the attack, university authorities immediately intervened and monitored his condition throughout his treatment. The institution maintained close communication with medical personnel handling his case while providing necessary support during his hospitalization.

Despite efforts by healthcare professionals to save his life, Otabor eventually succumbed to his injuries on June 2, 2026, throwing the university community into mourning.

The tragic development has sparked renewed concerns about the safety and security of students living and moving around areas surrounding tertiary institutions. Many students and members of the university community have expressed grief over the loss, describing the deceased as a young scholar whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.

Following his death, university representatives met with members of his family and relevant authorities as part of efforts to provide support and ensure that justice is served. The institution also pledged its full cooperation with security agencies investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.

University authorities stated that they remain committed to ensuring a thorough investigation into the incident, expressing hope that those responsible will be identified, apprehended, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The management further emphasized the need for improved security measures within communities hosting higher institutions, noting that the safety of students remains a matter of critical importance.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, on behalf of the university community, extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and colleagues of the deceased. She described the loss as painful and unfortunate, praying for strength and comfort for those affected by the tragedy.

The university also called for justice for the late student, urging law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to book and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Otabor’s death has left a deep sense of sorrow within the institution, with students and staff mourning the loss of a promising young academic whose future was abruptly cut short by violence.
