Teachers under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory Wing, on Tuesday staged a peaceful solidarity rally in Abuja to advocate for improved security in schools and greater protection for teachers and students across the country.
The demonstration brought together educators, union officials, education stakeholders, and supporters who marched through parts of the Federal Capital Territory carrying placards and banners with messages calling for safer learning environments and stronger measures to address insecurity within the education sector.
Held under the theme, “United for Education, Together for Our Future,” the rally focused on the need to protect schools from criminal activities and ensure that teachers and learners can carry out their responsibilities without fear or intimidation.
Addressing participants during the gathering, union leaders expressed concern over the growing security challenges affecting educational institutions in different parts of the country. They noted that recurring attacks on schools have continued to create anxiety among teachers, students, and parents, while also threatening access to quality education.
According to the union, teachers remain among the most dedicated public servants, often working in remote and underserved communities to provide educational opportunities for children. They argued that educators deserve adequate protection and support, considering the vital role they play in shaping future generations.
The union leadership emphasized that insecurity in schools not only affects teachers and students directly but also undermines national development by disrupting learning activities and discouraging educational advancement. They warned that continued threats against schools could have long-term consequences for the country’s human capital development.
Participants at the rally called on government authorities at all levels to adopt more proactive measures aimed at safeguarding educational institutions. Among their recommendations were improved security infrastructure around schools, enhanced surveillance systems, stronger collaboration between communities and security agencies, and increased investment in educational facilities.
The teachers also stressed the importance of creating a safe and conducive learning environment where children can pursue their education without fear. They maintained that schools should remain places of knowledge, growth, and opportunity rather than locations associated with insecurity and uncertainty.
Union officials further appealed to policymakers to prioritize the welfare and security of teachers, noting that many educators continue to serve in challenging environments despite the risks involved. They argued that protecting teachers ultimately translates to protecting the future of the nation’s children.
The peaceful rally also served as a platform for educators to express solidarity with colleagues and learners affected by security challenges in various parts of the country. Participants reiterated their commitment to promoting education while calling for stronger efforts to address threats facing the sector.
As the march progressed, demonstrators urged authorities to strengthen measures capable of preventing future attacks on schools and ensuring that perpetrators of crimes against educational institutions are brought to justice. The rally concluded with participants submitting their concerns and recommendations to relevant authorities, urging urgent action to enhance school security and guarantee the safety of teachers and learners nationwide.

Participants expressed hope that their advocacy would contribute to meaningful reforms and stronger policies aimed at safeguarding education across Nigeria.
