Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has taken an early lead in the presidential primary election of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general election.

The exercise, which is being closely monitored across the country, is expected to determine the party’s presidential flagbearer for the next electoral cycle.

Atiku is contesting the primary alongside former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

Early results obtained from several states showed the former vice president establishing a strong lead as delegates continue voting and collation progresses nationwide.

Atiku reportedly secured victories in Gombe, Abia, Ebonyi, Sokoto, and Zamfara states, strengthening his position in the race for the party’s ticket.

In Gombe State, Atiku polled 139,334 votes to defeat Amaechi, who recorded 1,150 votes, while Hayatu-Deen secured 464 votes.

The former vice president also emerged victorious in Abia State with 25,153 votes. Amaechi followed with 18,339 votes, while Hayatu-Deen received 3,264 votes.

Results from Ebonyi State showed another comfortable lead for Atiku, who secured 15,300 votes. Amaechi polled 2,200 votes, while Hayatu-Deen managed 200 votes.

In Sokoto State, Atiku recorded 68,823 votes, leaving Amaechi with 292 votes and Hayatu-Deen with 319 votes.

A similar outcome was recorded in Zamfara State, where Atiku secured 60,500 votes. Hayatu-Deen scored 436 votes, while Amaechi received 191 votes.

The ongoing primary is considered a significant moment for the ADC as opposition parties continue consultations and political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Political analysts believe the outcome of the primary could influence future coalition talks among opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the next general election.

Party officials are expected to officially announce the final collated results after votes from the remaining states and the Federal Capital Territory are concluded.
