Fresh concerns have emerged over the 2027 governorship succession in Oyo State amid speculations that Governor Seyi Makinde may have endorsed Bimbo Adekanmbi as his preferred successor.

Speaking in Ibadan, the coordinator of the forum, Rafiu Akinwale, called on the governor to honour an alleged agreement reached before the 2023 governorship election to prevent political tension and mistrust among stakeholders.

Akinwale stated that the meeting held in Ogbomoso was attended by prominent religious and political leaders, including the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland and a former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Oyo State.

According to him, there was a clear understanding at the meeting that a Muslim would succeed Makinde in 2027 as part of efforts to maintain fairness, inclusion, and religious balance in the state.

He warned that allowing personal interests or pressure from political camps to influence the succession arrangement could undermine trust among stakeholders.

The group, however, maintained that its position should not be viewed as an attempt to promote division or religious politics, stressing that it was only demanding fairness and consistency in political commitments.

It added that abandoning the alleged agreement could lead to dissatisfaction among some political and religious stakeholders in the state.

“We are not opposing anyone’s ambition, but agreements and political commitments should be respected. Oyo State belongs to everyone and trust remains important in leadership,” the group stated.
