The Federal Government has approved a N150bn extension of the Bodo-Bonny Road project in Rivers State, signalling a shift towards smart, durable, and economically impactful infrastructure development.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed that the project—structured under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement—has received presidential approval and will be forwarded to the Federal Executive Council for final ratification.

Umahi said the extension would be constructed using reinforced concrete technology with a projected lifespan of 50 to 100 years, a move aimed at significantly reducing maintenance costs while ensuring long-term value.

He explained that the project reflects the administration’s transition from conventional road construction to modern, technology-driven infrastructure capable of supporting sustainable economic growth.

Beyond the road expansion, the government outlined plans to transform major highways into smart economic corridors. These will feature solar-powered street lighting, extensive tree planting, and digital monitoring systems to enhance safety, environmental sustainability, and commercial activities along key routes.

The minister also announced plans to deploy Closed-Circuit Television cameras across major highways, supported by monitoring centres to improve surveillance and enable emergency response within minutes.

In addition, the road design will include rest areas, service stations, and operational hubs to support maintenance and improve user experience. Truck parking facilities are also planned to address congestion and improve logistics efficiency, with ongoing consultations with host communities.

Umahi stated that contractors have been directed to reinvest cost savings into value-adding features such as solar lighting and landscaping, while maintaining strict adherence to project standards.

He added that a firm completion timeline of 12 months has been set, alongside measures to prevent cost overruns and ensure accountability.

During the engagement, the Managing Director of Nigeria LNG Limited, Adeleye Falade, highlighted the company’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions, including the development of Compressed Natural Gas-powered vessels.

The Bodo-Bonny Road remains a strategic link connecting Bonny Island—home to key oil and gas infrastructure—to the mainland. Its expansion is expected to improve connectivity, boost economic activities, and reduce reliance on waterways for transportation.

The project also reflects the government’s broader strategy of leveraging Public-Private Partnerships to address infrastructure gaps while tapping into private sector funding and expertise.
