The Confederation of African Football has announced its support for Gianni Infantino in his bid to secure a fourth term as president of the FIFA.
The decision was reached during a meeting of CAF officials held ahead of the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, where member associations unanimously agreed to back Infantino’s re-election when the position becomes vacant again in 2027.
Infantino first assumed office in 2016 following the exit of Sepp Blatter amid a major corruption scandal that rocked the organisation. Since then, he has overseen a series of reforms within FIFA and was re-elected in both 2019 and 2023.
Although FIFA statutes generally limit presidents to three terms, Infantino remains eligible to contest again because his initial tenure—from 2016 to 2019—is classified as a partial term and does not count toward the official limit.
CAF’s endorsement underscores growing support for Infantino within global football circles, particularly among African federations. The backing is seen as significant given CAF’s influence and voting strength within FIFA’s decision-making structure.
The move also reflects a broader alignment among continental football bodies, with other regions signalling similar support for continuity in FIFA’s leadership ahead of the next election cycle.
If re-elected, Infantino would extend his leadership of world football beyond a decade, further shaping FIFA’s policies, global competitions, and development programmes across member nations.
