A 400-level medical student of the College of Health Sciences at Obafemi Awolowo University, Adewole Emmanuel, has reportedly collapsed and died during a clinical examination session.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when the Part IV student was said to have slumped shortly before the start of his oral medical examination. He was immediately attended to by lecturers and fellow students present at the scene, and efforts were made to revive him before he was later confirmed dead.

His passing has thrown the university community into mourning, coming just months after another medical student from the same institution reportedly died in similar circumstances, raising renewed concerns about student welfare and academic pressure within the medical programme.

Student representatives described the loss as deeply painful, noting that the deceased was a promising young medical student with a bright future ahead. They extended condolences to his family, classmates, and colleagues in the College of Health Sciences, especially members of his medical class, who have been particularly affected by the incident.

The tragedy has also sparked wider reflection within the campus community about the intense demands placed on medical students. Many expressed concern about the physical, emotional, and psychological strain associated with rigorous academic and clinical training, stressing the importance of balancing academic excellence with health and well-being.

In response to the incident, the university management expressed sorrow over the sudden death and confirmed that it has begun engaging relevant stakeholders, including the bereaved family, to better understand the circumstances surrounding what happened. Authorities also assured that necessary support is being provided to the family and affected colleagues.

Meanwhile, fellow students and colleagues continue to pay tribute to the deceased, describing him as intelligent, dedicated, and passionate about medicine. Many have called for improved emergency preparedness and stronger support systems within medical training environments to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
