Tinubu receives Jonathan at presidential villa

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday visited President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in what observers describe as part of ongoing consultations on regional political developments and Nigeria’s role in West Africa.

The meeting, held around 4 p.m., was confirmed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who shared photographs showing both leaders in a relaxed discussion.

Although no official details of the agenda were disclosed, the visit follows a similar engagement between the two leaders in November 2025, amid political tensions in Guinea-Bissau.

At the time, Jonathan had just returned from the country after leading an election observation mission under the West African Elders Forum. His visit came shortly after a military intervention disrupted the electoral process, leading to the arrest of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

Jonathan had urged regional leaders to prioritise dialogue and ensure the release of detained political actors, while also calling for the completion and announcement of the election results.

In January 2026, transitional authorities in Guinea-Bissau announced plans to hold presidential and legislative elections on December 6, 2026, though the timeline is yet to receive full endorsement from regional bodies.

Since leaving office, Jonathan has remained active in diplomatic and mediation efforts across West Africa, participating in election observation and peace initiatives in countries including Mali, The Gambia, Liberia and Guinea-Bissau. He has often described his role as that of a “roving ambassador” for peace and democratic stability in the region.
