The extremist group Boko Haram has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Nigerian government, demanding action over hundreds of captives reportedly being held in its custody.

In a video message circulating online, a masked spokesperson for the group warned that failure to meet its demands within the stipulated timeframe could result in severe consequences for the hostages. The group claimed it is currently holding 416 individuals, including women and children, who were abducted in parts of Borno State.

The spokesperson, who delivered the message in Hausa, declared that the ultimatum was both a final warning and a call for immediate response. According to the group, the captives’ fate depends on whether its demands are met before the deadline expires. The threat has heightened fears for the safety of those in captivity, particularly vulnerable groups such as women and minors.

The insurgent group also directed its message to local stakeholders, including community-based organisations in the affected region, urging them to intervene. The tone of the message suggested that the group considers the situation urgent and non-negotiable, raising concerns about a possible escalation if no resolution is reached.

Security analysts note that such ultimatums are often used by extremist groups to exert pressure on authorities and draw attention to their demands. However, they also warn that these threats can sometimes be carried out, making swift and strategic responses crucial.

The situation underscores the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East, where communities continue to face threats from insurgent activities. Authorities have yet to issue a detailed public response to the ultimatum, but security operations in the region remain active.

Observers stress the importance of coordinated efforts between security agencies, local leaders, and humanitarian organisations to address the crisis and ensure the safe rescue of those held captive.
