The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced plans to stage a peaceful solidarity rally on February 3 in support of striking workers of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).

The rally is being organised in solidarity with the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), which is leading an indefinite strike by FCDA workers over unpaid salaries and unresolved welfare issues.

In a joint statement issued in Abuja, the unions said the action was aimed at reaffirming labour’s collective resolve that injustice against one worker amounts to injustice against all within the Nigerian labour movement.

Workers under the umbrella of JUAC commenced the indefinite strike on January 19, following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the management of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on January 7.

The strike has led to the shutdown of key administrative offices, including the FCTA Secretariat and the FCDA headquarters.

According to the unions, the planned rally will send a clear message that organised labour will resist all forms of intimidation and injustice against workers.

They described the workers’ demands as legitimate and non-negotiable, stressing that the struggle would be sustained until outstanding grievances are fully addressed.

The NLC and TUC said their support for JUAC members remains total and unwavering, urging the striking workers to remain united, courageous, and steadfast in the defence of their rights.

They explained that the rally would be peaceful and lawful, and would be directed at the management of the FCDA as a demonstration of collective resistance against injustice.

The labour centres also directed their affiliates and state councils to mobilise members massively for the rally, warning that intimidation or repression would not weaken workers’ resolve.

Reiterating that workers’ rights are won through collective struggle, the unions assured workers in the Federal Capital Territory that they would not be abandoned.
