Former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has called on Nigerian leaders to prioritise the welfare of citizens and adopt people-centred leadership as the country navigates 2026.
Jonathan made the call in his New Year message, where he stressed that unity, shared responsibility, and integrity are critical to Nigeria’s future, especially amid ongoing economic challenges and security concerns.
Reflecting on the past year, the former president acknowledged the difficulties many Nigerians endured, noting that economic pressures and persistent insecurity tested the nation’s resilience.
“The period behind us has not been without its trials—challenges that have tested our resilience and, for many families, brought hardship and loss,” he said.
Despite these challenges, Jonathan commended Nigerians for their courage, solidarity, and perseverance, describing their resilience as one of the nation’s greatest strengths.
Looking ahead, he urged both leaders and citizens to recommit to the country’s core values, emphasising that true patriotism must be matched with service, humility, and integrity.
“Leadership at all levels must be anchored in service, guided by humility and a sincere commitment to the welfare of the people,” Jonathan stated.
He concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and fulfilling year, while expressing hope for continued progress toward unity, justice, and shared prosperity.
