Nigeria lost approximately 3.33 million barrels of crude oil to theft in 2025, with about 65.8 per cent of the reported losses occurring in the final quarter of the year, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
The commission disclosed this in its 2025 annual report released on Thursday, which also showed that Nigeria’s oil and gas revenue declined by 17.03 per cent, from N12.56tn in 2024 to N10.42tn in 2025.
The report revealed that crude oil theft rose significantly in the fourth quarter, with 2.19 million barrels recorded, compared with 440,434 barrels in the third quarter. The first quarter recorded 896,471 barrels, while the second quarter showed a negative figure of 200,400 barrels due to excess volumes identified during reconciliation.
Despite the losses, Nigeria produced 541.08 million barrels of crude oil and blended condensate in 2025, alongside 48.52 million barrels of unblended condensate.
The report also showed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited spent N8.67tn on energy security in 2025, compared with approximately N3.1tn in 2024, reflecting increased expenditure on protecting the country’s oil and gas infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the NUPRC recorded 357 oil spill incidents during the year, with sabotage accounting for 49.5 per cent of the cases. Revenue from gas flare penalties increased by 56.27 per cent to N611.42bn, while signature bonuses rose to N532.94bn.
The commission generated N10.42tn in revenue against its projected target of N16.54tn, representing 63 per cent performance.
