The Federal Government has announced plans to gradually withdraw military personnel from internal security operations as the Nigeria Police Force strengthens its capacity to handle security challenges across the country.
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), disclosed this on Thursday at the APC Abuja Roundtable, noting that the military’s increasing involvement in internal security duties had placed considerable pressure on troops.
Musa said the armed forces were currently supporting the police in building their operational capacity, adding that military personnel would gradually return to their barracks once the police became better equipped to handle internal security responsibilities.
He expressed concern over the prolonged deployment of soldiers, saying many troops had spent years away from their families due to repeated assignments across different parts of the country.
The minister also called for improved security measures, including the restoration of tollgates and a more effective national identity registration system, stressing that proper identification and monitoring were essential to tackling insecurity.
