President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate seeking approval for a supplementary external borrowing plan of $20.52bn and €1.045bn to finance infrastructure and development projects across the country.

The proposal was reported by Vanguard and The Guardian as one of the major stories featured in Nigerian newspapers on Wednesday.

The Guardian also highlighted concerns over Nigeria’s rising debt burden, noting that the proposed borrowing comes amid increasing debt refinancing obligations and limited savings to meet maturing debt payments.

Meanwhile, Vanguard reported that the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress had reached an agreement on measures to ease the economic hardship facing workers. The agreement includes a monthly transport allowance of N70,000 for six months and plans to clear 19 months of outstanding allowances owed to health workers.

Another major story concerned the deaths of 33 detainees in the custody of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps in Minna, Niger State. According to Vanguard, an independent ministerial committee recommended the dismissal, administrative sanctions and prosecution of some officers over the incident. The committee also recommended N1.4bn in compensation for victims and survivors.

The Punch reported that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara had asked his supporters to stop referring to him as their leader following his reconciliation with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Fubara reportedly said he was now a member of the Rainbow Coalition, which he identified as being led by Wike.

In another political development, Daily Trust reported that Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani had declared his readiness to support Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Sani maintained that his support for the President was based on conviction, despite public dissatisfaction over the prevailing economic hardship.
