Michael Carrick is expected to remain in charge of Manchester United for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, according to reports from British media on Tuesday.

Carrick’s future at Old Trafford has come under intense scrutiny following the club’s poor run of form, which has seen them go eight matches without a win.

United’s latest setback was a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, leaving the club just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.

However, the BBC, Sky Sports and the Press Association reported that Carrick would lead the team against Chelsea this weekend.

The 45-year-old arrived at United’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday to oversee a routine training session. The BBC, citing sources, reported that the club’s hierarchy would give him an opportunity to turn the situation around.

Carrick was handed a two-year contract in May after overseeing an impressive revival during his spell as caretaker manager. United subsequently finished third in the Premier League, securing qualification for the Champions League.

However, the club have struggled this season, winning just two of their 12 matches in all competitions. Their return of seven points from eight league games represents their worst start to a league campaign in 40 years.

Carrick declined to give a direct answer about his future after Sunday’s defeat to Bournemouth. He acknowledged the supporters at full-time as some fans chanted his name, while others expressed anger at the players and the club’s leadership.

Former United midfielder Wayne Rooney also criticised the players over their recent performances.

Speaking on the Stick to United podcast, Rooney said the players had failed to justify their performances and pointed to the frustration and disappointment among supporters.
