The Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Hassan Shafa, has warned political parties and their supporters against violence, hate speech, fake news and other acts capable of undermining the 2027 elections.
Shafa gave the warning on Wednesday during a meeting with chairmen and representatives of political parties in the state.
He urged political actors to conduct peaceful campaigns, cooperate with security agencies and allow voters to freely choose their leaders.
According to him, the 2027 elections should be seen as a contest of ideas rather than a battle to be won through force.
The commissioner also warned party leaders that they would be held accountable for the conduct of their supporters, including youth groups and social media influencers.
He cautioned against the destruction of campaign posters and banners, display of weapons and the use of private security outfits during rallies, stressing that the police would enforce the Electoral Act 2022.
Shafa further urged politicians to avoid exposing voters to danger in areas affected by banditry, including Sabon Birni, Rabah, Kebbe, Tureta and Isa.
Speaking on behalf of their parties, the APC Chairman, Haruna Adiya, and other political representatives pledged support for peaceful elections and compliance with electoral laws.
The Labour Party Chairman, Abubakar Yawale, called on politicians to stop sponsoring thugs, while the NDC Secretary, Bello Labaran, urged greater involvement of other security agencies in election planning.
Labaran also called for fairness in the enforcement of regulations on campaign posters and banners.
The police commissioner reiterated that security and credible elections were a collective responsibility and urged political parties to provide security agencies with information on emerging threats and potential flashpoints.
