President Bola Tinubu has defended his administration’s economic reforms, saying they are necessary to position Nigeria for a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

Tinubu, represented by APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, said the removal of fuel subsidy, foreign exchange reforms and increased revenue mobilisation had strengthened the country’s economic foundation.

He cited rising foreign reserves, improved trade, economic growth and declining inflation as evidence of progress.

Tinubu also highlighted investments in roads, railways, ports, energy, education and youth development, saying the projects would create jobs and support long-term economic growth.

However, former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, criticised the policies, arguing that Nigerians had endured years of hardship while the government was only now promising relief.

Atiku’s spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, said the administration should focus on reducing the cost of living, particularly through lower energy and transportation costs.

He also questioned the benefits Nigerians had received from the reported savings following fuel subsidy removal.

Atiku has maintained that the government’s economic policies have increased the burden on Nigerians, while the Tinubu administration insists the reforms are laying the foundation for sustainable growth.

The debate is expected to remain a major issue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
