The Federal High Court in Abuja has commenced hearing on a suit seeking to stop the planned 2026/2027 local government elections in Oyo State.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who presided over the case on Tuesday, ordered the plaintiff to serve the originating summons on the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The court adjourned the matter until September 10, 2026, for a report on the service of the court processes.
The suit was filed by Ogbomoso-based businessman and politician, Akinloye Oyeniyi, who is challenging parts of OYSIEC’s revised timetable for the council elections.
Oyeniyi is particularly challenging OYSIEC’s proposed verification and screening of candidates, arguing that the commission’s powers are limited to verifying documents submitted for nominated candidates.
He is asking the court to stop OYSIEC from screening candidates and to cancel the disputed sections of its election timetable.
The plaintiff is also seeking an order preventing INEC from releasing the certified voters’ register for Oyo State to OYSIEC for the election until the disputed provisions are removed.
The case will return to court on September 10.
