Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress Chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another occupant of his vehicle.
The incident occurred on Thursday along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.
The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday.
According to the police, the gunmen emerged from the surrounding bush at about 5pm and opened fire on motorists along the highway.
A blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH was later found abandoned on the road. The driver, identified as Yunusa, was found dead inside the vehicle, while another occupant was reportedly taken into the bush by the attackers.
Saliu said the police, working with other security agencies, had intensified operations in the area and were combing the surrounding forests to rescue the abducted victim and apprehend the attackers.
She added that Yunusa’s body had been evacuated to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy, while investigators were pursuing available leads to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, directed security operatives to sustain operations along the affected route and ensure that those responsible for the killing and abduction are brought to justice.
The police urged motorists and residents in the area to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.
The attack comes shortly after gunmen abducted National Youth Service Corps members travelling through Kogi State. Police later announced the rescue of 11 of the victims.
