Scientists Link Nepal Flood to Glacier Collapse

Scientists say a glacier collapse likely triggered the devastating flash floods that swept through parts of Nepal and Tibet, killing more than 160 people and leaving hundreds missing.

Experts said a large section of ice and rock broke away from a glacier near Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, sending a powerful surge of water, mud and debris downstream and damaging communities and infrastructure.

The United States Geological Survey said the seismic signal recorded during the disaster was caused by the collapse and resulting debris flow, rather than a conventional earthquake.

Scientists said the exact cause of the collapse remains unclear but warned that rising temperatures are making Himalayan glaciers and surrounding mountain slopes increasingly unstable.

Rescue operations are continuing as authorities search for survivors and assess the destruction.
